Your Eye Test Explained

At N1 EssilorLuxottica Opticians, you can rest assured that our thorough eye tests provide a reassuringly accurate assessment of your vision.

We use the latest technology to quickly establish the state of your vision and the health of your eyes. Included as part of a standard eye examination in the majority of our stores, we use retinal screening to look in far greater detail at the health of your inner eye and identify a range of potential conditions. We are committed to providing the very best quality when it comes to eye tests and dedicate sufficient time to all patients to ensure the very best in eye care.
A standard eye test lasts for approximately half an hour and the optician will use a range of tests tailored to your individual needs. All of our eye tests are carried out using the very best in eye examination technology and your optician will provide step-by-step explanations so you know exactly what is involved at each stage. From your eye test through to finding the perfect frames and lenses for clear, comfortable vision, we will take the time to ensure that all aspects of your eye care are expertly looked after.

WHY SHOULD YOU HAVE AN EYE TEST?

Having clear, comfortable vision is paramount and we always use the very latest in eye examination technology to ensure that we can provide an accurate assessment of your vision. Regular eye tests also gauge the general health of your eyes and can result in the early identification of other eye problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
Our eye tests can be booked over the phone, online or by visiting your nearest N1 EssilorLuxottica Opticians store.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU HAVE AN EYE TEST?

Whatever your age, we recommend that you have an eye examination at least every two years. For children and people aged over 70, we recommend an eye test every year – or more often if recommended by your Opticians.

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

You can be rest assured that although having an eye test is a very straightforward process; all our examinations are very thorough. Lasting approximately half an hour, one of our opticians will look closely at all aspects of your vision and eye health.
A few questions will be asked about your sight, general health, your family’s health and your lifestyle. There are lots of different tests that can be carried out during your eye examination so your optician will tailor this to suit your individual needs. While testing your eyes, the optician will look at the following:

Vision quality
Unaided and aided vision (with any glasses or contact lenses you already use)
Eye muscle performance and health
Internal eye health – ideally using our state of the art Retinal Scanner
Front of eye health, including eye fluid pressure
Further tests for depth perception, colour vision and visual field may also be performed if required
All of our tests are carried out using the very best in eye examination technology and your optician will provide step-by-step explanations so you know exactly what is involved at each stage.

LEADING EYE CARE TECHNOLOGY

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
At our Wigmore Street branch, we include Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) as part of a standard eye examination and therefore charge a slightly higher rate of £35. OCT is a non-invasive imaging test that uses light waves to take a cross-section of your retina, the light-sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye. With OCT, each of the retina’s distinctive layers can be seen, allowing your optician to map and measure their thickness. These measurements help with the early detection and diagnosis of retinal diseases and conditions, including age-related macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease, among others.
Retinal Imaging
Retinal screening and the detailed image of your retina it provides, allows our opticians to look in far greater detail at the health of your inner eye and it also highlights a range of conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, risk of a stroke and symptoms associated with brain tumors. Regular retinal screening allows the optician to make year-on-year comparisons of the health of your eyes and easily detect any changes that have occurred.
We believe this technology is incredibly important which is why we offer it at a majority of our stores. If you’re over 40, digital retinal photography is automatically included as part of your eye examination for no extra charge. And if you’re under 40 and your optician recommends it, we will also provide it at no extra charge.
You simply rest your chin and forehead on the pads of the screening machine whilst photographs of your inner eye are taken. This test only takes a few minutes and at no point do we touch your eye or cause any discomfort.

Retinal Screening is available at the following locations;
